about

The backing chords making up this song were written many years ago for the piano. That version can be heard in the first part of the 2016 trailer (youtu.be/WncFKrXdUMc). It wasn't until recently I finally finished it for the acoustic guitar, styling it after the type of folk song a bard might sing around a campfire or in a tavern at the end of the night, as eyes drunken with mead threaten to close in slumber. In "The Thirteenth Hour," it serves as such a lullaby at one point, though the tone and subject matter is rather somber, warning us not to take the living beings on our Earth for granted, since they may not be around forever.

lyrics

Dragons’ Eyes

Intro: Am G Am

Am G
A long, long time ago
Am
From legends dead
G
There comes a tale
F
From which it’s said

Em
There is a place
Dm
It’s hard to see
Em Dm
East of here, and West of there
Em
Where all the eye can see
F
Is made of gold

G
And so it goes –
F
The story rolls –
Em
Twisted ‘round by man
Dm
In ambitions cold.

F
To find the way
G
Of which no man knew
F
Except through dragons’ eyes
G
So, off they flew

F
To hunt them down
G
For dragons’ eyes
F
Could show the path
G
To that magic land
F G
Where all one wished for could come true

Break: Am G Am G F G Am

Am G
And many a ship

Am
Washed up on the sand
G
But never they found
F
That magic land
G
Of gold and wishes at command
F G
For dead dragons’ eyes can not show
F G
And in rage and greed, man’s folly grew.

Am G
So the last dragons fell
Am
In blood and fire
G
Except for two
F
A young male and his heart’s desire
G
That wished to run no more
F
So into a cave they flew
G
To nurse their wounds
F G
As their hunger grew.

F
Too many to fight,
G
Too weak to fly
F
Perhaps the dragons gods
G
Shone bright that night
F G
On courage, and love, one final stand
F G
So the dragon race would not end
F
And so they cast their lot
G
Upon the wind
F G
Into fate’s hands they did swim

Am Em
But dragons still roam
F
As do hate and greed
G F
So let this tale make you brave
G Am
So magic things do not end.
