about
This is a ballad written from the perspective of Aurora from The Thirteenth Hour. It comes from a passage in the book where our young protagonists are starting to realize that there might be more to their relationship than just friendship, trying to awkwardly navigate the beginnings of young love, with all its stops and starts, trials and tribulations, and bittersweet awkward moments familiar to anyone who’s been there and/or watched a teen movie.
The song starts out without no accompanying beat, and although I knew I wanted to fold one in later in the song, the original tempo I used felt too slow. The song I originally envisioned was quite minimal, almost acapella, and meant to be sung by a woman, since it was written and meant to convey Aurora's point of view. But I don't have the right kind of voice for that sort of thing on top of not being female. So - I dressed this version up with 120 beats per minute, synths, and lots of reverb, since you can almost have too much of the latter two!
You can learn more about the creation of this track on episodes 223-225 and 256-257 of The Thirteenth Hour Podcast, available on major podcasting platforms.
